How to Apply Your Lipstick

Lipstick isn’t about looking good; it’s about feeling good. Studies show it gives you confidence. It delivers an emotional boost. It will get you through almost anything and everything that’s thrown at you.

That’s why, even though it can be a pain to apply, knowing how to do it can be crucial to any makeup routine.

But when you’re about to start out, it can seem like such a daunting task. How do you know what colours will look good on you? How should you apply it?

With a few easy tips applying lipstick will become second nature.

I was a Professional Film & TV Makeup Artist myself for over 25 Years. I am going to show you 9 tips from the Makeup Experts that will have you applying your lipstick like a pro in no time.

1. Start with a Clean Slate
Makeup looks best when it’s applied to a prepped surface. Lipstick is no exception.
First, you need to scrub your lips. This removes any flaky areas or dry patches that lipstick can cling to. Use a damp washcloth to exfoliate your lips. Or you can use a lip scrub that has added moisturising ingredients. Some people dip the cloth in a little granulated sugar. Tastes lovely too!
Next, make sure to apply lip balm which contains sunscreen. This not only adds extra moisture but also protects the lips against the sun’s damaging rays.

2. Work Your Way Up
When you’re about to start out, going from a bare look to bright colours in one swift stroke can be intimidating.
So, it’s best to start simply and work your way up. Start with tinted lip glosses. Or transition from neutral tones to brighter shades of lipstick.
If bright colours seem scary, try wearing them in low-pressure situations first.
Like wearing bright colours to the shops or walking the dog. That way you’ll feel more confident when you finally wear it to the office or debut it at College or Uni.

3. Whiten Your Teeth
It may seem silly to be talking about teeth when discussing lipstick. But the two go hand in hand more than you might realise.
Every time you wear lipstick, it draws attention to your mouth. This puts your teeth at the centre of attention. If your teeth aren’t looking as bright as they should, it will show. Big time.
Whitening your teeth will not only solve this problem. It can also improve the look and tone of your lipstick as well.

4. Experiment with Shades
Standing in front of a Cosmetics Counter in a shop can feel completely overwhelming. So many colours, so many options. How are you to know which ones will work best on you?
Simple. Look into a mirror.
Play it safe. Pick something that is within a couple of shades lighter or darker than your natural lip colour.
For brighter colours, pale lips look best in corals and cherry reds. Reddish lips can pull off bright orange or hot pink. Darker lips can have fun with deeper vampy colours.
Don’t forget about your hair colour. The lighter it is, the brighter your lip colour will look.

5. Don’t Feel You Have to Match Lipstick and Lip Liner
Matching your lip liner to your lipstick is passé!
Thank goodness! No one wants to see a ring around someone’s lips anymore when the lipstick fades.
For the most part, you don’t need to wear lip liners at all. Most lipsticks don’t feather or bleed nowadays.
If you feel the need to, opt for a lip liner that matches the natural shade of your lips. That way if your lipstick does fade, you won’t have to face anyone with that dreaded ring.

6. Blot, Blot, Blot
Blotting is your lipstick’s best friend. A friend that will give your colour staying power all day long.
First, apply the lipstick to your lips straight from the container. Then blot by pressing your lips onto a tissue before reapplying the lipstick from the tube once more.
The first application gives your lips a base colour. It will last through sips of coffee and that long work presentation.
The second application amps up the colour and shine. All you may need to do is touch up the shine once or twice throughout the day. The base colour will shine through.

7. Dare to Go Nude
Nude lipstick looks impressive when done right. But they can look washed out and cakey if it goes wrong.
To find the most flattering nude shade for you, look no further than your skin tone. Keep within a little bit brighter or deeper than your natural tone.
For an odd but fool-proof tip, colour-match the shade to your nipples.

8. Start in the Centre
To make any lipstick application easy and mistake-free, all you need to do is start in the centre.
With an application brush, or straight from the tube, apply the lipstick to the centre of your bottom lip. Blend outward toward the edges. Repeat on your top lip.
This process decreases the risk of errors or any over-application mistakes.

9. Change with the Seasons
In the same way that you switch your wardrobe every season, you should also vary your lipstick. That’s the fun part of the changing seasons!
Summer means more natural lip colours, such as glosses and nude or pink shades.
Winter is all about deeper shades, like wines, burgundies and plums.
You have plenty of time all year round to experiment with different looks and shades. You can then find the perfect colours for you.
